After more than three decades, Ritchie Blackmore is set to perform on stage with Deep Purple once again. The legendary guitarist has revealed that he plans to make a guest appearance during the band’s concert at Northwell at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, New York, on August 12.

Blackmore revealed during an Instagram livestream that he is expected to join the band during the encore for one song. The idea came from Blackmore himself, who contacted singer Ian Gillan before the rest of the band gave the appearance the green light.

It will mark a historic reunion. Ritchie Blackmore’s absolute last concert with Deep Purple took place on November 9, 1993, at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham, England. He left the band shortly afterwards. Deep Purple later continued with Steve Morse on guitar, while Simon McBride currently holds the position.

The song Blackmore will perform has not yet been revealed, although it will not be “Highway Star,” as Deep Purple already plays the classic earlier in the show.

The 81-year-old guitarist has dealt with several health issues in recent years, including serious back problems. Ahead of the appearance, Blackmore received an injection in his lower back and will have a stool available on stage if he needs to sit down.

Although it is expected to be only a brief guest appearance, the occasion will be significant. If everything goes according to plan, it will be the first time since 1993 that Ritchie Blackmore has performed on stage with Deep Purple.
