Ennui – “Qroba” – Atanathos
There are moments in the life of an extreme metal listener where music ceases to be a distraction and becomes a mirror of one’s own mortality. Listening to Ennui, the entity born on the banks of the Kura River in Tbilisi, Georgia, has always been a transformative experience. But with their fifth studio album, «Qroba»(which translates from Georgian as «vanishment» or the process of disappearance), the band has managed to capture the exact moment when light surrenders to shadow.
Since breaking onto the scene in 2012 with «Mze Ukunisa», inspired by the existentialist poetry of Terentio Graneli, Ennui has built a formidable reputation based on the brutal honesty of their proposal. After the acclaimed «End Of The Circle» (2018), the wait has been long, but on February 27, 2026, via Meuse Music Records, we will witness what I consider to be the absolute pinnacle of contemporary funeral doom/death metal.
The narrative of «Qroba» is devastating. In the words of the album’s own concept, it is the vision of the hand of doom enfolding the sun and dragging it down to the horizon. As a critic, I have spent hours immersed in this record, and the sensation is constant: the loss of color, the bleeding of reality into grey, and finally, the revelation that only in absolute blackness can one see with a clarity that light denies us.
The album opens with «Antinatalism», a piece that redefines the concept of scale. Alexander Gongliashvili’s drum beats resonate like thunder in a deserted valley, while David Unsaved’s vocals rise from the deepest chambers of the heart. There is a piercing intimacy in this track; despite the vastness of its chords, it feels like a whispered confession about grief and solitude. It is a cold welcome, a stripping away of solar warmth that prepares us for what is to come.
If «Antinatalism» introduces us to the desert, «Becoming Void» forces us to walk through it. The weight of the first chords is enough to drive the breath from any chest. It is a reminder that life’s comforts are illusions ground pitilessly into the frozen soil of the tomb. However, amidst this desolation, the guitars of Serge Shengelia, Andrey Azatyan, and Kakhi Kiknadze weave melodies of a sadness so sublime they are painfully beautiful. It is this contrast between brute force and melodic delicacy that places Ennui above their contemporaries.
The subtlety reaches its zenith in «Decima». Here, the band integrates a fascinating cultural element: the panduri, a traditional three-stringed Georgian lute. The use of this instrument is not a mere folkloric ornament; it brings an ancestral melancholy, evoking the solitude of the Caucasus Mountains. The way the panduri’s delicate notes intertwine with avalanches of sound creates an atmosphere of prolonged anguish that seems to stop time itself.
The final stretch of the album takes us from the overwhelming majesty of «Down To The Stars» to the definitive unmaking with «Mokvda Mze». In this final track, the initial notes of rich resonance are gradually consumed by an inexorable power. The vocals shake the earth and the lamenting melodies drag us toward fathomless seas. By the end of the record, the sensation of having slipped into nothingness is absolute.
It is imperative to mention the work of Greg Chandler (leader of the mythical band Esoteric) in the mixing and mastering. His expert touch at GLDCHN Studios has endowed «Qroba» with an agonized sonic nobility. The layered depth allows each of the four guitars to have its own voice in this collective lament. The sound is heavy, yes, but it is also incredibly crisp and honest.
Visually, the album is a gift. The art by Ben J ‘Winterkeep’ (Ofnus) and the design by Vladimir ‘Smerdulak’ Chebakov (known for his work with 1914 and Lake Of Tears) perfectly encapsulate the concept of disappearance. The cover is a window into the vale of tears that Ennui invites us to cross.
«Qroba» is a masterpiece of patience and feeling. Ennui has managed to balance the heaviness of bands like Skepticism or Shape Of Despair with a very distinct identity marked by their Georgian heritage. It is not just a metal album; it is a document on the silent acceptance of the end. It is, without a doubt, a milestone that will redefine the genre in the years to come.
Score: 9.8 / 10
«Qroba» is the culmination of fourteen years exploring the void. Ennui has delivered an album that is not only musically heavy but emotionally unbearable. The integration of the panduri and Greg Chandler’s production elevate this work to the altars of the genre. If you seek music to accompany you in the deepest reflection on existence and vanishment, this is the cold, ungentle bed where you will want to rest.
